The incredible stretch of coastline around our hotel includes famed Candolim Beach, a long and languid strip decked out with plentiful sun loungers. Walk beyond the southern border to reach 17th century Fort Aguada, a popular spot for watching the setting sun.

On Arpora Hill, north of Baga, this bustling market sells funky jewellery, clothes, bags and accessories with a good dose of Goan sartorial style while entertaining with its mix of live music, bars and restaurants.

A little further afield, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Old Goa is the place to head to if you wish to immerse yourself in historic buildings of southern European splendour. Brilliantly preserved landmarks will transport you a bygone era.

Founded by Subodh Kerkar, this gallery displays the thought-provoking work of contemporary Indian artists with fine examples of painting, sculpture, photography and video installation. The ‘Histories of Goa’ exhibition offers a fascinating perspective on regional culture.

A prominent Hindu temple to have survived the Portuguese invasion, Mangueshi is a sight to behold, constructed in a quintessential Goan style of architecture, boasting a distinctive octagonal lamp tower. Visit at night when the monument is illuminated.

Families will be entertained for hours at the Goa Science Centre and Planetarium, home to hands-on interactive displays covering everything from celestial objects to life in the oceans. Catch 3D films in the planetarium and wander around the outdoor park.

Characterised by mangrove swamps and water channels, Goa’s only bird sanctuary is found on serene Choroa Island. Take the boat trips organised by Goa’s Forestry Department to see white egrets, purple herons, kites, kingfishers and sandpipers.
