Ever
since it opened on the 19th of August 1994, Someplace Else,
the British style pub at The Park Kolkata has dominated
pub culture in the city. Someplace Else has evolved from
a thriving discotheque with a ‘hanky of a dance floor’
to the mecca of music, the only pub with live music today.
The ten-year journey has not been easy, but Someplace Else
has emerged victorious to attain its distinctive character.
The pub celebrated its 10th birthday in August with a line-up
carefully balanced to reach to its loyalists, brought up
over the years on an appetite of the best of music. Seeped
in tradition of music and good times, it has been the launch
pad of many a musician who have dreamed a dream... a unique
brand... an amazing success story... and the one true name
amidst the ever changing music scenario to successfully
recreate the Sixties live entertainment on Park Street –
that is the essence of Someplace Else.
The
intoxicating aura of the British pub, the ambience, draught
and lager coupled with outstanding music from diverse genres
– the mood of celebrations had set in from the very
beginning of the month.
Zeroing
in on the first performance by ZERO on Friday August 13th,
2004, was a whole lot of Someplace Else fans. The young
metal band from Mumbai did it all, from the Beatles to La
Bamba and everything in between to keep them rocking till
the wee hours.
On Friday August 20th, 2004, it was LOUIZ BANKS with SKINNY
ALLEY, all that jazz all the way! And a true blue Banks
performance it was, with the music lovers jamming the pub
and the dance floor. With his twinkle fingers eliciting
music out of the keyboards, Louiz Banks and Skinny Alley
held the jazz lovers in a trance with original compositions.
The most eagerly awaited event in the Anniversary month,
BACK TO SOMEPLACE ELSE ’94 on Saturday August 21st,
2004 was all the way, a flashback to 1994. It was time to
smile, drink and squeeze into the ‘hanky sized dance
floor’ to shake a leg; as the evergreen DJ Austin
belted out the popular D.I.S.C.O., Where do you go, Sexy
Eyes, Ding Dong Song, Rup Tera Mastana and Dekha na. With
black and white records as invites, the mood at Someplace
Else was vintage, and all in all, a real birthday treat
for the partygoers who could not but relive their memories
of first dates and more!
Saturday
August 28th, 2004 saw a fitting finale to the Anniversary
month with USHA UTHUP live & later GARY LAWYER jamming
up with the band HIP POCKET. The show took off with original
pop queen Usha kicking up a storm of golden oldies. What
followed was everything from Wonderful Tonight to I Love
You Just the Way You Are. With the crowd already on a musical
high, Gary’s renditions of an eclectic mix of covers
of Neil Diamond, Summer of ’69, and I Want to Break
Free kept the revellers thirsting for more.
Today,
an era is gone by but the potent feeling of nostalgia rides
along; and as Kolkata has grown, Someplace Else has maintained
its unique character with a live band playing every day
of the week. In the words of Anirban Simlai, Director Food
& Beverage, and former manager of the pub, “We
are proud of such a unique brand as Someplace Else; which
is close to musicians, patrons and staff alike. The transformation
from a discotheque to the mecca of music was difficult,
but Someplace Else has stood the test of time. The place
has seen an increase in footfalls and revenue every year,
which is rare in the industry. We will continue our efforts
to take Someplace Else to greater heights in the next few
years.”
A
10-year journey, a thriving discotheque, the favourite haunt
for live music, and a commitment to bringing the best of
international music – that and much more, is Someplace
Else.
