Glamorous.
Alluring. Irresistible. Sexy. Inviting
Roxy,
the new cocktail bar at The Park, Kolkata epitomizes the
glamour and the style of the 60s. The highlight of the place
is its spatial simplicity.
A
dramatic installation of polished aluminum ovals form a
stunning shimmering texture against the contrasting bricky
masonry wall. The furniture draws inspiration from stylish
elements of the late 1960s. Rounded edges soothe stressed
out minds trying to relax, while some of the materials used
for upholstery and cladding are contemporary versions of
materials used in the Sixties such as brushed brass, zebrano
veneer and chenille. A frosted glass wall bathed in aqua
LED light projects images from the virtual world.
Combinations
of aesthetic experimentation and sophisticated wit are common
to the bar’s design. The infusion of styles is the
mirror of the older shell of the building cleaved with the
retro furniture and the very modern, almost space-age mezzanine.
50s-tinged vocals splashed with 60s rhythms and 70s electronics
are perfectly synchronized to give the right effect.
The
bar enlists 56 varieties of wines from the world over, both
classic and contemporary, and the extensive cocktails list
includes daiquiris, margaritas, martinis and champagne cocktails
amongst others. It also has an admirable cigar collection.
The mobile DJ unit at the far end of the bar helps the DJ
to interact with the ground floor and the mezzanine.
With
Roxy, it is apt to pay tribute to the swinging 1960s, an
era that saw nightlife on Park Street at its peak. The Park
Hotels have successfully rejuvenated and brought the splash
of nightlife back on Park Street with new vigour be it in
Tantra, Someplace Else or in the new Roxy.
